More and more of life is lived through the digital screens that individuals carry with them nearly all the time. Digital life often merges with the whole of life, offering an opportunity to reconsider how we study human health and behavior in its natural context and time course. It is increasingly difficult to imagine any attempt to assess the time course of thoughts, feelings, behaviors or health without access to information obtained from digital media. To make this previously invisible record of life visible, technology now allows researchers to passively and unobtrusively capture, analyze and visualize everything that appears on digital screens. This is called the screenome, the unique record of life experiences and actions that constitute physical, psychological, social, and behavioral life on the screens of an individual’s digital devices. Screenomics is the science of the screenome. With Screenomics, we seek a greater understanding of the development, time course, causes, and correlates of human health, and to develop personalized, precision interventions to improve health and well-being.
