Discovering Solutions: The Solution-Oriented Research Paradigm

📍演講摘要：
Dr. Thomas Robinson是史丹佛大學醫學院兒童健康教授，長期投入肥胖預防、行為改變與數位健康領域的研究。在本次演講中，他將挑戰傳統生物醫學與社會科學研究多聚焦於「問題」的思維模式——探討健康不良結果的成因與機制。Dr. Robinson提出一個互補性的「解決方案導向研究典範」(Solution-Oriented Research Paradigm)，主張將研究重心轉向「解決方案」，透過實驗研究找出改善健康的方法與因素。這個概念上的轉變對於研究問題的提問方式、研究設計，以及如何呈現研究結果以直接影響政策與實務，都帶來重要的實務意涵。Dr. Robinson認為，解決方案導向的研究典範能夠縮短從實驗室到真實世界的發現週期，產生更立即且實質的健康影響。本場演講中，他也將分享一套「試金石測試」(litmus test)，協助研究者設計解決方案導向的研究。
A majority of biomedical and social science research is driven by a problem-oriented research paradigm, emphasizing reductionistic approaches to understanding the causes and mechanisms of poor health outcomes and risk factors (i.e., problems). Dr. Robinson proposes a complementary solution-oriented research paradigm, emphasizing experimental research to identify the causes of improved health (i.e., solutions). This conceptual shift has significant practical implications for phrasing research questions and hypotheses, designing research studies, and reporting results to directly inform policy and practice actions. Robinson argues, a solution-oriented research paradigm encourages research with more immediate relevance and impacts to human health and well-being, shortening the cycle of discovery from the laboratory to the real world. Finally, he will offer a “litmus test” to help design solution-oriented research studies.
