內容簡介:
Trolling is a worldwide phenomenon occurring in a variety of online environments, including social networking sites (SNS), games, and fora. In recent years, it has become a popular topic in the American news media for its influence on politics, but has been a topic of interest since the early nineties. However, there is still considerable confusion about trolling: What is trolling, exactly? How is it different from similar online phenomena like cyberbullying? Is it something that should cause real concern? Does it work the same way in different geographical and cultural regions? The presentation at hand will take you through these questions through the lens of existing research, with additional insights from Chrissy's own current work into the fundamentals of this puzzling form of online communication. Taking a multi-methods and interdisciplinary approach, she will explore the nature of trolling starting from some of the earliest recorded examples and concluding with the most recent research in progress.
Chrissy Cook is a PhD Researcher in Tilburg University, performing independent research as a TiCC affiliate at Tilburg University. Using a multi-methods approach (qualitative and quantitative), she investigates the phenomenon of asocial online behaviour, more commonly known as “trolling”. More specifically, after developing a general theory of trolling, she will address questions of a socio-cultural nature vis-à-vis trolling.
